Disc Harrow
Designing has started and I have it narrowed down to a couple directions. This, like the John Deere gear, is another piece of rusted old steel and was found buried, but this time not in a trash pile. It was mixed indiscriminately with concrete around an irrigation valve. The rust looks like it goes deep in places, and in others it has actually built up where it looks like some kind of element has adhered to the steel. The black you are seeing is paint. New discs are painted to prevent rusting. As soon as they are put to work tilling the ground the paint and then later rust rub right off showing the shiny steel underneath.
I was happy to find this piece as I have considered buying various discs multiple times. They come in different cuts and sizes, and this happens to be one of my favorites. The dish, which is the very top of a sphere, has half cirlces cut out of the outer edge. I find this alone aesthetically pleasing, but it gets even better. In the second picture you can see the angle that the semicircles were cut. The cut makes the edge broader, creating a more visually interesting and aesthetic piece. If you compare the first two pictures looking at the edges you can see what I am talking about.
Simple, I know, but this is why I held on to this piece and wanted to make it into something more. Personally I like it enough that if it wasn’t so large I would use it for a paper weight on my desk. I think it is a beautiful form.

I threw on a yard stick to help show its size. Not only is it large, but being solid steel makes it also heavy. Not the kind of thing you want to move around all the time.
